DIY Haircut During Pandemic #Coronacuts
With much of India still social distancing, it may be tempting or normal to avoid continuously growing shaggy hair. Some might resort to ponytails or maybe fancy caps to hide their messy hair. But just because you are not roaming outside for more than essentials like your groceries, it doesn’t mean that you will not be seen.
I am Neha Bhardwaj – a writer, blogger, and vlogger, working remotely. I began to notice how messy and crazy my hair was looking right on that little screen of my laptop. And, I was a little skeptical about going out and getting a haircut. So, I had to find an alternative – which was ‘DIY haircut during the pandemic.’
I got scissors, watched a few ‘DIY haircut during pandemic’ videos on YouTube, and tried my hands on chopping my hair off.
Also, I am a short height girl, who has tried different hairstyles till date. However, I also had in mind that not everyone’s ‘DIY haircut during pandemic’ might have been as good as they wanted. Everyone had their own experiences when it comes to chopping off their hair themselves.
#Coronacuts on Instagram has 9954 posts as of January 10, 2021 – and, trust me, not all of them were so nice to see. However, not all turned out to be so bad.
So, I asked myself, is it okay to try snipping on my own? I had seen results on Instagram, and it was not so enticing to me. I gathered information and advices from experts around, and that helped. I thought getting results from a DIY cut was possible now.
DIY Haircut During Pandemic – I Figured Out What I Wanted, First
You might have tried different hairstyles by now. And, that will help you in deciding what you exactly want. The same is my case – I have tried a lot of hairstyles, and this one began with figuring out what I really wanted on my head. So, I stood in front of the mirror and pictured myself in that hairstyle. Generally, women get bangs to get a noticeable change in their hair. However, I have not been brave enough to try that hairstyle since my school days.
So, I simply opt for the safest option, and somewhat in trend, which was ‘straight cut.’ During my research, I was Googling all the hairstyles for short height girl, and this one was all over. So, I thought why not. Let’s give it a try – I said in my mind, and the next I had a YouTube tutorial opened, just in case, I missed some steps, and join the league of those whacky hairstyles in the #Coronacuts on Instagram.
By opting for a new hairstyle, we wish for a dramatic look change. However, a DIY haircut during pandemic is not the case. I thought that this might be over soon – so just do the minimum and get it done after the COVID-19 is over.
How I Did my ‘DIY Haircut During Pandemic?’
Well, I was a bit skeptical about it in the beginning – but these tutorials gave me the confidence, also the fact that my hair is thin and short since forever. I don’t consider fine hair any bad anymore. The reason? Those with long thick hair around me think twice, even thrice before even thinking about chopping off their hair. I, on the other hand, just decided that I am going to DIY haircut during a pandemic. And, the next second, I was right in front of the mirror with scissors in my hand.
So, this is how I did my DIY haircut during the pandemic:
1. Understand Your Hair
First, understand your hair! If that is straight fine hair, it will end up showing mistakes more rather than thick hair. So, know your hair, understand the texture, and then begin. Also, trim what’s required, and don’t overdo it. A little can be hidden if gone wrong. Thicker hair is more forgiving. When it comes to ‘DIY haircut during COVID-19,’ less is more. Half-inch cuts are enough when doing it yourself. Remember, cutting more is possible, however, if cut once, you won’t be getting your hair back. So, do it wisely!
2. Take a Little
Don’t begin by taking a handful of strands – chop slowly. Be patient, take a deep breath, and first affirm that you can do it. So, take a small strand of hair (and very small in case you have thin hair, like me). But wait, forgot to tell you that I did straight cut, so the process started somehow differently. Depends on you, how you really want your hair to be like! No matter, what hairstyle you pick, just start slowly and with little.
3. Digital Tutorial, Works!
DIY haircut during pandemic is a much serious chore than we believe. You might end up hating yourself for the idea of snipping off your hair (if a DIY haircut gone wrong during COVID-19). Digital tutorials are the key to proceed safely with your haircut. That gives you an idea about how you should be doing it. It will guide you with some basic techniques, and that’s how you won’t have to shy away from your Zoom meetings anymore. Go for ‘live video lessons’ that will guide you through the process of basic cutting and trimming techniques. Want to try something else? Call up your hairstylist and ask him/her to teach you what suits you.
4. Tools Need to Precise
I thought of cutting off my hair with an old pair of scissors first. But never take the risk of chopping your tresses with old and rusted tools, as it might damage the hair. I ordered one from Amazon.in and it was apt for my hair. It should be really sharp, so that hair gets fine chopping.
How to determine if the scissors are sharp enough for your hair?
- Spray some water on the tissue and make a small cut in it with the scissors. If the cut is clean, scissors are good to go.
- If it is not sharp, try to cut layers of aluminum or sandpaper with the scissors, and you can convert blunt scissors into sharp ones within a few minutes.
5. Techniques Matters
Now, I literally scratched my head when I read about ‘techniques to DIY haircuts during a pandemic.’ I thought, “I barely know how to hold scissors, how would I like to learn the techniques in a minute?” But, then, I didn’t want that messy hair anymore – I wanted to look different during those pandemic days. The techniques matter and once you have mastered that, you would barely need anyone for your hair. Well, I didn’t master it at all, hence, I was pretty conscious about my so-called ‘DIY haircut during a pandemic.’
I did it! After fairly thorough research and hours of researching, I was able to do my DIY haircut during a pandemic. Umm, I would say, it might appear to be a daunting task, in the beginning, however, it is not. Once you know how much to chop, you will begin to get a hold of your haircut. So, that was my ‘DIY haircut during pandemic’ story. Try yourself – it is good to learn something rather than scaring people with messy hair. : p

4 years agoI love Hairstory products! I find that when my hair grows longer, I tend to throw it up in a bun or back in a ponytail. So, long is great in-theory, but… Normally, I’d be all over beauty product recs, but I use high-end hair stuff. What can I say!?!
